One of the biggest things that someone can do to save on their electric bill is to shut down that computer. I experimented with this for two months. One month I shut down my computer after everytime of using it, and the next month I would run it on standby. The second month my bill was $15 higher! That’s an extra 180$ a year. Not only does the computer use more electricity, but it also generates massive amounts of heat which in turn makes your A/C run more to regulate the tempature. Shut it down and pocket the savings!!

I am manic about uplugging the cable box when we leave the house. I read that it pulls down about 40 watts of energy (more than a laptop) when it is plugged in, but turned off. That is saves us about 400 watts just while we are at work! Now if I can just remember to unplug it before bed!
